The United States Mint designed the Barber coin collection, which was a collection of coins designed by the head of the Mint, Charles E. Barber. The coins were designed in 1891, and the 1894-S Barber Dime is one of the rarest in existence.
The dime, like the 1804 dollar and the 1913 Liberty Head nickel, is worth much more than its face value. The S-Barber was one of only 24 minted coins and only nine have survived to this day. All nine are proof coins, with two exhibiting heavy wear. One of them sold for US$ 1.3 million in 2005. Two years later, a copy was sold for US$ 1.9 million.
