In 1939, The Wizard of Oz wowed audiences at the box office, making over $24 million at the movie's big debut (the equivalent today of $472.54 million). The movie would go on to become an American classic, and memorabilia from the film, including costumes, has sold for millions as a result of its popularity.

One of the costumes that made the most money at auction was that of the Cowardly Lion, worn by actor Bert Lehr in the film. The costume was made of real lion skin and fur, and the face was a life-size sculpture of Lehr. It sold for $3 million at auction in New York in 2014.
