Ironic, there are fishing lures out there that are worth more than your truck or boat might be worth. One such lure is the Giant Haskell Minnow Lure, which sold for US$100,000 at auction. The 10-inch decoy was made by gunsmith Riley Haskell.
According to historians, the Haskell lure was the “first American fish-shaped lure,” and, because it had a rotating tail, it was the “first American animated lure” in existence. The patenting of the Haskell decoy occurred before the Civil War, in 1859. Riley Haskell marked the Ohio-made decoy with “R. Haskell” at the end, and this marking was one of the features that authenticated this valuable piece of history.
