The 24c Decline of Independence print was released in 1869 and far surpassed its original value. The green and violet print was a beautiful example of engraving. Made by James Smillie, the print had forty-two people, all of whom you'd need a microscope to see.
The 24-cent stamp series was one of the first pictorial stamp series in the United States. The new series wanted to pay homage to the history of the United States Postal Service, starting with Ben Franklin and ending with Abraham Lincoln. Part of the reason for this new focus was in response to the ugliness of the Civil War.
