While 1943 steel coins are only worth a few dollars, 1943 copper coins are worth between US $ 60,000 and US $ 200,000, if not more. Copper coins from 1943 are extremely rare. According to the United States Mint, only forty of these coins, made from a copper alloy, exist.
Coins from 1940 were only made from zinc-coated steel, not copper. Copper was needed for World War II, so these copper alloy coins were a mistake.
