Danish architect Philip Arctander performed in 1942 at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition and subsequently became director of the Danish Building Research Institute. Arctander collaborated with furniture giant Ikea to create these Clam chairs in 1954.
The vintage red clam chairs (so called because the covered back and seat were shaped like an open clam shell) were created by Arctander in 1944. Ikea made a replica in 1954. The furniture company later sold the chairs for 64,000 pounds sterling in London. Other vintage Ikea pieces that have done well in sales include Vilbert chairs, Karin Mobring Amiral chairs and more.
