Robby the Robot was an icon in the history of cinema. It was created for the 1956 “Forbidden Planet” and cost $125,000 ($1.2 million today), but when it was resold it far exceeded that original price. Robby the Robot was auctioned for over 5 million dollars, which was a worthy end to his successful Hollywood career.
Auction house Bonhams confirmed that this number is a record for an item from the film. In “Forbidden Planet,” a group of astronauts travel to a distant planet to discover the fate of another group sent there years before. The film has a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and is widely considered a science fiction classic.
